Hi Everyone,

For the past week and a half I’ve been suffering with the flu. Whew, achy joints, cough, fever, constant cold coming out of my lungs. Thankfully I think I’ve turned the corner and I’m on the road to recovery. This bout with the flu was my own fault. I went to Las Vegas for a friend’s wedding and while there I burned the candle at both ends. (Who doesn’t, Las Vegas is lots of fun!) And I’ve never gotten a flu shot so I was cruisin’ for a bruisin’ and did I ever get clobbered. As I laid on my bed recovering I couldn’t help but think about how our physical health can be a mirror for our fiscal health.

Think about it with me here. How many of you out there are like me and never get a flu shot? And then do you do something like a weekend run to Las Vegas? Guess what. That’s a good way to wear yourself out and set you up for a bout of the flu. (Trust me, I know.)

In the same way, look at your finances. Do you have all your financial affairs in order so that if you want to do something a little crazy, like say a weekend run to Las Vegas it won’t wear you out fiscally? If your answer to that question is no then maybe it’s time for you to get fiscally inoculated. What does that mean? First, take a look at your credit card balances? If you have credit card balances you don’t pay off every month then you need to start paying them down. The interest you pay on those cards is sapping your fiscal strength. After you get those credit card balances out of your life then start looking at either a house or a savings program. And those are not mutually exclusive by the way. Like I told you last newsletter there’s nothing like home ownership. And I want to tell you something you may not know. The credit union does mortgages. We’ve got a mortgage to fit your needs. Give Traci a call at 202-482-1924 and she’ll be happy to help you with your mortgage needs. Or visit our website at www.docfcu.org and take a look. And if savings is what you need we can facilitate that too. We’ve got fabulous rates on our money market accounts and our certificates of deposit and only $500 will get you a certificate of deposit with us.

The past few days have been a painful lesson for me. This fall for the first time ever I think I’m going to get a flu shot. That way if I want to have a little fun once in awhile it won’t cost me a week and a half for recovery. Hopefully you’ll inoculate yourself fiscally as well.

Till Next Time,
