Hi Everyone,

I’m a packrat, plain and simple. That statement became very clear to me as my wife and I looked through the boxes of stuff I had stored in our basement. It’s unbelievable the things we found. Back in 2002 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. I walked from Maine to Georgia, 2,168 miles, and it took me five months. As preparation for the hike I had read that corn pasta is supposedly good for providing energy. So I bought enough for five months. About the third week of the hike I was sick of corn pasta and never took the time to either eat it after the hike or give it to anyone. Last night we found out bugs love corn pasta. I also bought zip lock bags for the hike. Turns out I had lots of extras. I have letters and cards dating back to my years in the Peace Corps in the early 80’s. Is the correspondence from people I only vaguely remember or may not remember at all really all that important? And books, I’ve got enough books to start my own library. What last night did was make me realize that I buy all sorts of junk. I think that’s the proper term after looking at this collection of “treasures”. How much money could have been saved if I hadn’t bought and stowed away all of these odds and ends? After this week all my boxes of junk will be gone. Why? Because I’m disgusted by the whole mess.

Now it’s time for a question. How many boxes of treasures do you have stowed in your basement or your attic or your garage or your…you name the place but I’ll bet you’ve got some things stowed away. Go pull them out and either give the junk away or just toss it. What you will find is that you too have all sorts of things you’ll never use and you just don’t need. There are a couple benefits that will come from this exercise. You’ll spend less money on treasures and have more money to put into your savings program. Here at the credit union we can help you with your savings. We’ve got great rates on certificates and money market accounts and that means you earn more money. And oh, by the way the IRA season is here. If you have an IRA at a brokerage firm that’s not performing how you’d like it to roll it over to the credit union. Our interest rates on IRA certificate are really good and they’re fixed. That means you’ll be earning the same interest rate, day in, day out, until your certificate matures. It’s a simple task to do an IRA rollover. Give us a call and we can help you with all the details.

The other benefit that comes from getting rid of your unused treasurers is that all of the sudden you’ll have a bigger house and you won’t even have to leave your neighborhood. Speaking of houses, did you know the credit union does mortgages? We have very competitive rates on both first mortgages and home equity loans that can save you money. Give Traci a call at 202-482-1924 or visit our newly redesigned website at www.docfcu.org. We’d love to help you with all of your mortgage needs.

Please join me in this campaign to get rid of our treasures…also known as junk and start building up some real treasures by putting your money to work for you at the credit union.

Till Next Time,
